Job Description
The Travel Welder executes welding, fixturing, and shipment support for turbine components via rail, vessel, and truck, while ensuring the safety of themselves and their team. This position is based out of Cheyenne, WY/Northern CO with frequent travel around the country, primarily in the TX Gulf region. Salary range is $28 to $30 per hour.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform various welding activities including gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux core arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and flame/plasma gouging/cutting.
- Setup manual welding and flame/plasma cutting equipment by adjusting parameters.
- Prepare welding joints and repair surface/weld imperfections using flame/plasma cutting equipment and grinding.
- Conduct product quality inspections and make necessary corrections.
- Operate material handling equipment, forklifts, and rigging to fit-up and relocate component rail fixtures.
- Perform daily maintenance inspections on equipment and address minor issues.
- Coordinate with Manager and Transport employees to prioritize workflow, schedules, and deadlines.
- Supervise loading and securement of wind turbine components in various ports.
- Ensure the loading and securement of turbine components to railcars according to Vestas specifications and AAR Open Top Loading Rules (OTLR).
- Record and document loading and securement of turbine components in an app-based reporting system.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment by adhering to safety protocols and performing routine housekeeping.
- Operate heavy equipment, including but not limited to Class 1-7 equipment, forklifts, tractor with 3-point PTO, front-end loader, grader, compaction roller, skid steer, and telescopic forklift.
- Perform fabrication and repair of mild steel components to base-level structures.
- Modify railcar interfaces according to blueprints and specifications.
- Review production schedules, customer orders, and requisitions to determine necessary items for movement, installation, inspection, or distribution.
Required Experience
- 3 to 5 years of welding or fabrication experience preferred.
- Experience in heavy equipment operation.
- CDL Class-A required.
- AAR Open Top Loading Rules experience preferred.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, ERP/MRP systems, and SAP is a plus.
Required Education
- High school diploma or GED required; on-the-job or other related experience may be considered.
Work Environment
- Travel requirements: Works in various locations with significant travel (>50%) by company vehicle, including across state lines.
- DOT regulated position.
- Ability to meet physical demands and work environment requirements.
