Job Description
The Mechanic Heavy Equipment (Traveling) position at BNSF Railway offers a monthly pay rate of $8,726.19, with an approximate annual salary ranging from $104,714 to $136,000 based on business needs, hours worked, and other factors. This full-time, unionized role involves extensive travel across designated regions and requires working in diverse weather conditions. The position includes company-paid training, both on-the-job and in the classroom, and is located in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain and repair the fleet of equipment operated by BNSF.
- Disassemble, repair, modify, manufacture, overhaul, and troubleshoot equipment, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and fuel systems, driveline components, and final/planetary drive systems.
- Operate equipment and use a variety of manual, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools to perform necessary maintenance and repairs.
- Engage in daily safety conversations and adhere to safety regulations, rules, and policies.
- Perform work in a safety-sensitive environment with various physical tasks, including lifting up to 60 lbs and working on uneven surfaces, around loud noises, and with heavy machinery.
Required Experience
- Minimum of two years of verifiable mechanical work experience or training.
- At least one year of verifiable experience working with gasoline and diesel engines on large, industrial equipment.
- Three months of verifiable experience with electrical and/or gas welding.
- One year of verifiable experience with electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagrams and schematics.
- Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) and understand verbal communication in the work environment.
- A minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with air brake endorsements, or the ability to obtain one within the first 60 days of employment.
- 21 years of age or older
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a safety-sensitive environment where conditions can include extreme weather, walking on uneven surfaces, exposure to loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
- Shifts are Monday through Friday (10-hour shifts), with overtime after ten hours, and may include alternating shifts, nights, on-call duties, weekends, and holidays.
- Extensive travel to various job sites within the designated region.
