Job Description
The Mechanical Management Trainee position at BNSF Railway is a unique opportunity for emerging mechanical professionals to enter the railway industry. This full-time, paid position offers a competitive salary of $70,200 and provides a 6-month comprehensive training program that includes hands-on experience, mentorship, and technical training in locomotive and freight car maintenance and repair. The program prepares trainees for leadership roles in mechanical operations and field supervision.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage mechanical shop and field operations and support project management efforts, preparing for a field operations supervisory role.
- Ensure the safety of teams by conducting job safety briefings and overseeing compliance with safety protocols.
- Provide updates to the General Foreman to ensure daily plan requirements are met.
- Supervise craft employees to ensure safe execution of terminal or shop operating plans.
- Coordinate labor and equipment to inspect, test, and repair equipment to meet daily operational needs.
- Ensure compliance with BNSF’s employment policies, safety regulations, union agreements, and industry standards (AAR/FRA).
- Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, clear communication, and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
Required Experience
- Legally authorized to work in the United States, with no need for sponsorship and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
- Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to perform work in varying outdoor and shop environments, including climbing ladders and navigating uneven surfaces.
- Up to 25% travel may be required.
- Less than 3 years of professional work experience, excluding internships or part-time roles during education.
Required Education
- An Associate's degree in industrial trades (e.g., Welding, Diesel Engine Repair, HVAC, Automotive Tech, Electrician Tech, Construction Management, or similar) from an accredited college or vocational school, to be completed before hire.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required.

Working Conditions
- Work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor, safety-sensitive environment, subject to diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
- The role involves walking on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises and heavy/moving machinery, climbing ladders, and walking on elevated or uneven surfaces.
