Job Description & Requirements
Alstom is seeking a Composite Mechanic with a pay rate of $28.68/hour. In this role, you will inspect, repair, and maintain diesel-powered vehicles, performing tasks such as basic maintenance, engine overhauls, and retrofitting engines with emission control systems.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations for safety and operations.
- Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions in engines, air brake equipment, running gear, and locomotive components.
- Perform equipment work order management using an asset management database.
- Operate locomotives, passenger coaches, and prime movers as part of a team to move rail equipment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in accordance with the union agreement and incidental work rule provisions.
Required Experience
- 2 years of combined mechanical and/or electrical work experience in a relevant field (Formal education may be substituted for experience).
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints.
- Experience interpreting circuit schematics.
Required Education
- High School diploma/GED.
- Valid Driver's License.

- Ability to read and understand safety instructions, manuals, and directives.
- Effective communication skills with supervisors and team members.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately.
- Basic problem-solving skills with the ability to escalate issues when necessary.
Basic Competencies
- Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications—both general and technical).
- Strong communication skills (ability to provide clear instructions and directions).
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory.
- Must be able to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation and qualification.
- Clean driving record with no moving violations related to alcohol or substance abuse within the past 36 months.
- Basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Outlook).
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds rarely.
- Regular stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, balancing, climbing.
- Frequent pushing, pulling, gripping, and carrying.
- Walking long distances over uneven terrain.
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity.
- Occasional exposure to equipment that intensifies heat conditions.
Employment Conditions
- Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries.
- Wear protective equipment, including hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses.
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and shift work.
- Complete annual training and pass a safety rules examination.
- Subject to random drug and alcohol testing per certifications.
- Must pass all required assessments and a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing.
- Position governed by a collective bargaining agreement (membership required).
- Active employees must complete one year in their current position before applying for other positions.
