Job Description & Requirements

Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway, where joining our Engineering Department means contributing to the backbone of our nation's rail infrastructure. As a Signal Apprentice, you will be part of an apprenticeship program leading to positions such as Signalman, Signal Maintainer, and/or Shop Signalman. This full-time role includes company-paid training and progressive pay increases.
Pay rate is approximately $27.45/hr; approximate annual salary $57,096.

This position is subject to on-call availability (24/7), overtime, rotating shifts (including nights, weekends, and holidays), and extensive travel (up to 90%) outside of the headquarter location, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Relocation assistance is not available, and the position includes a 60-day probationary period.

Primary Responsibilities

Perform construction, reconditioning, installation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of wayside signal devices.

  • Load/unload supplies; install underground/overhead cables including trenching and digging.

  • Operate and work around heavy machinery and highway grade crossings.

  • Climb signal masts, bridges, and ladders; handle electrical cables and connections.

  • Use hand and power tools such as drills, voltmeters, amp meters, tape measures, and more.

  • Operate backhoes, trenchers, boom trucks, and directional boring machines.

  • Maintain a safety-sensitive work environment and adhere to all safety policies and equipment requirements.

Required Experience

  • Able to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship now or in the future.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the anticipated start date.

  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license.

  • Able to pass a Department of Transportation medical exam (open for discussion).

  • Willing and able to travel extensively and report to the designated work location.

  • Physically able to lift/carry up to 60 lbs, frequently handle 15–30 lbs.

  • Able to distinguish colors and auditory signals.

  • Comfortable using tools, climbing, bending, walking, and standing for long periods.

  • Willing to learn and follow safety policies and wear required PPE.

  • Union membership with the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen is required.

Required Education

  • No specific education requirements mentioned, but must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Work Environment

Daily work is conducted in a safety-sensitive environment and includes:

  • Exposure to extreme weather (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet).

  • Uneven terrain, loud noises, fumes, and moving machinery.

  • Work around or operation of heavy equipment and tools.
