Job Description & Requirements
Join Alstom as a Composite Mechanic and play a key role in maintaining and repairing diesel-powered rail vehicles. This full-time, unionized position is based in Los Angeles (CA), US, covering the Greater Los Angeles area, including San Bernardino, Riverside, Lancaster, and East Ventura. The role offers a salary rate of $28.68 per hour.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all railroad safety rules, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
- Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions in engines, air brake systems, and locomotive components.
- Manage equipment work orders through the asset management database.
- Operate locomotives, passenger coaches, and prime movers as part of a team to move rail equipment.
Required Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of combined mechanical and/or electrical work experience in a relevant field (formal education may substitute for experience).
- Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints and circuit schematics.
Required Education
- High School diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver’s License.

- Ability to read and understand safety instructions, manuals, and directives.
- Effective communication skills for collaboration with supervisors and team members.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately.
- Basic problem-solving skills and ability to escalate issues as necessary.
Basic Competencies
- Verbal comprehension (understanding oral and written communications, both general and technical).
- Communication skills (providing clear instructions and directions).
- Reasoning skills (problem-solving and troubleshooting).
- Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory.
- Must be able to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation.
- Driving record must be free of any moving violations for alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 36 months.
- Basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (e.g., Outlook).
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds rarely.
- Capability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, balance, and climb regularly.
- Push, pull, grip, and carry on a regular basis.
- Walking long distances over uneven terrain.
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity.
- Exposure to elevated heat conditions on occasion.
Employment Conditions
- Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries.
- Wear protective equipment such as hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses.
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shifts.
- Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations.
- Subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing as per regulations.
- Must pass all required assessments and a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing.
- This position will be governed by a collective bargaining agreement, and membership is required.
- Active employees must complete one year in their current position or craft before applying for new positions.
