Join Alstom as a Composite Mechanic and play a key role in maintaining and repairing diesel-powered rail vehicles. This full-time, unionized position is based in Los Angeles (CA), US, covering the Greater Los Angeles area, including San Bernardino, Riverside, Lancaster, and East Ventura. The role offers a salary rate of $28.68 per hour.

Primary Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all railroad safety rules, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions in engines, air brake systems, and locomotive components.
• Manage equipment work orders through the asset management database.
• Operate locomotives, passenger coaches, and prime movers as part of a team to move rail equipment.

Required Experience

• Minimum of 2 years of combined mechanical and/or electrical work experience in a relevant field (formal education may substitute for experience).
• Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints and circuit schematics.

Required Education

• High School diploma or GED.
• Valid Driver’s License.

• Ability to read and understand safety instructions, manuals, and directives.
• Effective communication skills for collaboration with supervisors and team members.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately.
• Basic problem-solving skills and ability to escalate issues as necessary.

Basic Competencies

• Verbal comprehension (understanding oral and written communications, both general and technical).
• Communication skills (providing clear instructions and directions).
• Reasoning skills (problem-solving and troubleshooting).
• Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory.
• Must be able to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation.
• Driving record must be free of any moving violations for alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 36 months.
• Basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (e.g., Outlook).

Physical Requirements

• Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds rarely.
• Capability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, balance, and climb regularly.
• Push, pull, grip, and carry on a regular basis.
• Walking long distances over uneven terrain.
• Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity.
• Exposure to elevated heat conditions on occasion.

Employment Conditions

• Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries.
• Wear protective equipment such as hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses.
• Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shifts.
• Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations.
• Subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing as per regulations.
• Must pass all required assessments and a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing.
• This position will be governed by a collective bargaining agreement, and membership is required.
• Active employees must complete one year in their current position or craft before applying for new positions.
