Job Description & Requirements
Join BNSF Railway as a Signal Apprentice in Livingston, MT, and start a fulfilling career in the Engineering Department. This apprenticeship provides hands-on training for positions such as Signalman, Signal Maintainer, and Shop Signalman, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of signal equipment and collaborating with other departments to support operational efficiency. The pay rate is approximately $27.45/hr, with an annual salary of around $57,096. This position requires the ability to work on-call (24/7), including overtime, weekends, and holidays, and travel up to 90% of the time outside the headquarter location. Training is provided at no cost, and pay increases with each qualification step.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of wayside signal devices.
- Load and unload supplies, trench, hand dig, and install cables (underground and overhead).
- Work around or operate heavy machinery, including backhoes, trenchers, and boom trucks.
- Handle electrical connections, climb signal masts and bridges, and perform tasks in safety-sensitive environments.
- Operate a range of power and non-power tools such as voltmeters, drills, power saws, and shovels.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and use safety equipment at all times.
Required Experience:
- Ability to work safely in diverse and extreme weather conditions (e.g., hot, cold, rain, snow).
- Experience working with heavy machinery, tools, and electrical components is a plus.
- Ability to travel frequently and work in various terrain types, including uneven surfaces, snow, and mud.
- Able to work in the US without company sponsorship now AND in the future.
- At least 18 years of age or will be by the anticipated start date listed above.
- Possess a valid state-issued driver's license.
- Ability to travel for extended periods of time (Fly, Drive, or Ride).

Working Conditions:
- Daily work in a safety-sensitive environment with exposure to extreme weather conditions, loud noises, fumes, and heavy machinery.
- Frequent climbing of ladders and signal poles/platforms.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs occasionally and 15 to 30 lbs frequently.
- Will be required to work on various terrain types (uneven, snow, mud, rock, sand).
