Job Description & Requirements

As a Composite Mechanic at Alstom, you will be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles, performing tasks such as engine overhauls, electrical system maintenance, and retrofitting emission control systems. This role requires compliance with railroad safety regulations and involves the operation and repair of locomotives and other rail equipment.
Salary Rate: $28.68/hour

Primary Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair engines, air brake equipment, running gear, or locomotive components.
  • Ensure compliance with railroad safety rules, regulations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Perform equipment work order management using the asset management database.
  • Operate locomotives, passenger coaches, and prime movers as part of the team to move rail equipment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in accordance with union agreement and incidental work rule provisions.

Required Experience

  • 2 years of combined mechanical and/or electrical work experience in a relevant field (Formal education may be substituted for experience).
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and circuit schematics.

Required Education

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Effective communication skills with supervisors and team members.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately.
  • Ability to solve basic problems and escalate issues as necessary.

Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (understand oral and written communications—both general and technical).
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions).
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills).
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory.
  • Ability to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation and qualification.
  • Clean driving record, free of moving violations related to alcohol or substance abuse in the past 36 months.
  • Basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds rarely.
  • Regular stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, balancing, and climbing.
  • Regular pushing, pulling, gripping, and carrying.
  • Walking long distances over uneven terrain.
  • Demonstrating auditory and visual acuity.
  • Occasional exposure to heat-intensifying equipment.

Employment Conditions

  • Work safely to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Wear protective equipment such as hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses.
  • Work hours may include nonstandard workweeks, overtime, and shift work.
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing per certifications.
  • Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing.
  • This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement, with membership required.
  • Active employees must complete one year in the current position or craft before applying for positions.
