Shipping and Receiving Lead

  POSITION PROFILE

The Shipping & Receiving Lead is responsible for overseeing daily dock operations, ensuring accurate and timely handling of all inbound and outbound materials, and delivering exceptional customer support for shipping, receiving, and office services. This role requires strong attention to detail, proficiency in logistics processes, and the ability to safely manage packages, equipment, and hazardous materials in compliance with regulatory standards. The Lead will coordinate coverage, maintain workflow across multiple service areas, and serve as a key point of contact for internal customers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide dock coverage maintaining consistent presence during core hours.  
  • Ensure safe operation of dock equipment, including pallet jacks and handling of heavy items.
  • Maintain valid Dangerous Goods / CFR‑49 certification or complete required training upon hire.
  • Respond to customer inquiries, offering guidance on packaging, labeling, documentation, and shipment preparation.
  • Assist customers with package lookups and status updates.
  • Receive and process up to 100 inbound accountable packages daily using SCLogic.
  • Track and report inbound volumes quarterly.
  • Deliver incoming packages to 20–25 campus mailstops each day.
  • Participate in PIT training provided by BSC.
  • Pick up outgoing mail and packages ahead of courier deadlines.
  • Sort, label, and prepare outbound shipments for carrier pickup.
  • Execute routing of interoffice and campus materials.
  • Manage 5–10 weekly international shipments via FedEx, DHL, and Kuehne + Nagel using the ShipIt platform.
  • Prepare commercial invoices, declarations, and waybills for international export.
  • Provide customer support related to international shipping requirements and documentation.

 

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Certifications)

 

  • 4-6 years of experience in shipping, receiving, warehousing, or logistics.
  • Working knowledge of domestic and international shipping practices.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver heavy packages safely.
  • Ability to lead and using judgment in redirecting coverage, coordinating tasks, resolving issues, and escalating operational challenges or service disruptions to management when needed.
  • Strong customer service skills with a solution‑oriented mindset.
  • Clear and professional communication with customers, carriers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment with high accuracy.
  • HazMat CFR-49 certification or willingness to obtain certification.
  • High School Diploma.

Working Conditions, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is primarily performed in a warehouse, loading dock environment with frequent movement between operational areas and campus delivery locations.

  • The role requires constant awareness of surroundings to ensure safe movement around dock equipment and material handling tools.

  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver packages up to 50 lbs independently; heavier items may require team lift or equipment.

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling throughout the shift.

  • Regular operation of material‑handling equipment (pallet jacks, carts, PIT).

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions including scanning, loading/unloading, and sorting packages.

  • Comfortable working on loading docks in varying temperatures (seasonal heat/cold exposure).

  • Coverage required between 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM, with primary presence during peak hours (7:30 AM – 4:00 PM). Occasional schedule adjustments may be necessary based on business needs or customer requirements and will stagger shifts to ensure coverage.

  • Regular handling of packages that may include regulated, international, or hazardous materials. Strict adherence to all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and CFR‑49 compliance standards is mandatory.
